Joachim Löw: "We'll fight back in the New Year", 15.10.2014

Joachim Löw answered journalists’ questions in a press conference shortly after the 1-1 draw against Ireland in the EURO 2016 qualifier in Gelsenkirchen. They only have themselves to blame for conceding a late goal. “We were too naive in the final minutes, only played the ball forwards and lost control of the game,” said Löw. The focus now lies ahead to the match against Gibraltar on 14th November in Nuremburg.

Question: How disappointed are you after the 1-1 draw against Ireland?

Joachim Löw: We’re all obviously very disappointed. We anticipated coming away from the matches against Poland and Ireland with more points. We now need to look forward. We will win against Gibraltar, gather ourselves and focus on our strengths. We will get back to where we were and fight back next year.”

Question: What went wrong after the first goal was scored?

Löw: We were too naive in the final minutes, only played the ball forwards and lost control of the game. We made a few bad passes and played the ball back to Manuel Neuer too often. We gave the opposition the chance because of this. It’s still annoying that Ireland used their only real chance to score the equaliser in the final seconds.

Question: What would you criticise about the way your team played?

Löw: We lacked depth in the first-half. We made it easy for Ireland to defend. We were better in the second-half and put more pressure on them, but we were unfortunately unable to score a second goal. A few players were lacking mental and physical freshness, but that’s what I expected and therefore will and precision were lacking as a result. You could see that one or two players had played at the World Cup.

Question: Mats Hummels arrived a step too late for the equaliser…

Löw: Overall, the centre back did things well. You have to bear in mind that Mats began preparing for the game a lot later and therefore it’s normal that he was lacking a bit of freshness. For the equaliser, we took our eyes off the goal scorer for a fraction of a second. But these things happen in football. We lacked organisation in the box for the goal. But we could have also prevented the cross.

Question: Do you feel that after the slow start of the World Champions in the European qualifiers there is now some pressure?

Löw: No, we know this type of pressure because wins are always expected of a Germany team. That hasn’t changed since we became World Champions. We have always proven that we can overcome the pressure.

Question: In the 2-0 loss against Poland you had a lot more chances than your opponents and it was the same against Ireland. Will you have to rethink who you play up front?

Löw: Obviously to only score one goal in two games is not good enough considering how many chances we had. Against Ireland we didn’t have as many chances as we did in Warsaw, yet we lost 2-0. But I don’t see any reason to make personnel changes.

Question: Did your team lack leaders in the games against Poland and Ireland?

Löw: Obviously we miss players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil. But Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Jerome Boateng and Toni Kroos have taken on more responsibilty during these games and they did it well. But obviously we’re excited to have one or two of our more experienced players back in the side.

Joachim Löw: "I don't see any major problems", 12.10.2014

Germany manager Joachim Löw spoke at a press conference following the 2-0 defeat to Poland in Warsaw and broke down the result. “I’m confident that we will make up for it,” he explained, and also heaped praise on debutant Karim Bellarabi. DFB.de summarises the key statements.

Question: Joachim Löw, what did you make of your team during this historic loss to Poland?

Joachim Löw: First off, my compliments to Poland. You could see that they played against the World Champions full of motivation and commitment. I think there’s only one thing I can fault my team for, and that’s that we didn’t score a goal from the numerous chances we had. We played a good game with a somewhat changed side; I can’t criticise the performance. Poland scored with their very first opportunity. We were then left chasing the game. But I can’t be unhappy because we created a lot of goalscoring chances. We just weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net.

Question: Will it be similarly difficult against Ireland on Tuesday?

Löw: Ireland’s tactics will be similar. We are familiar with a few of their players from recent years. They’re a side that predominantly defend and play on the counter. We will talk about our finishing and how we can convert chances like we had. We really pushed for a goal in the second half and had some good link-up play going forward. We had 28 shots, a tally we don’t often reach. Finishing and efficiency is the main focus for us.

Question: After the 2-1 loss to Italy in the EURO 2012 semi-finals in Warsaw, isn’t it strange to be leaving here once again as the losing team?

Löw: I don’t feel it’s all that dramatic. We still have plenty of chances. Sure, we would have liked to have come away with three points, but I’ve had a slight feeling this week that’s things haven’t been coming as naturally to us. Our attitude and our focus was fine, but the young players need to gain experience. We’ve now lost a qualifier again after 33 games unbeaten; that can happen sometimes. We will try and learn from it. I’m confident that we will make up for it though. I don’t see any major problems in our qualifying campaign. However, we know that we will have to put everything into it. We’ve lost this game, but the ball keeps on rolling on Tuesday.

Question: How happy were you with debutant Karim Bellarabi’s performance?

Löw: I was pleased with Karim. He got into the game more and more and had some good moments. He was very lively and hands-on for his first international match. I’m thoroughly satisfied. He improved as the game went on and also provided some danger going forward.

Question: You have lost two of your three games since winning the World Cup. Is life more difficult as World Champions?

Löw: The first defeat (4-2 to Argentina) doesn’t go down as a competitive game. What’s not surprising is that every team wants to give that extra few percent against the World Champions. There have also been more radical changes to the squad since the World Cup than I had hoped for. Not only have three players retired, but four or five players are missing who have always played and have helped shape the team, players like Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira and of course Bastian Schweinsteiger. Over the next two years, our young players have to have experiences that they will learn from. Life hasn’t gotten any harder, despite the huge disappointment of this defeat. Life is much, much nicer than before the World Cup.

Löw: "Podolski could start", 10.10.2014

In what sort of form is the national team in? Germany manager Joachim Löw and Lukas Podolski, the forward who originates from Poland, spoke about Saturday’s European Championship qualifier against Poland in Warsaw (20:45 CEST) during a press conference today. DFB.de rounds up the key statements.

JOACHIM LÖW ON…

…the possibility of Lukas Podolski starting: I should say that just because Lukas has come to the press conference, it doesn’t mean that he’ll be automatically starting. It’s clear that he hasn’t played many games for Arsenal this season. But Lukas has always shown that he can bring dynamism to the game. It’s possible that Lukas could start the game, especially considering our attacking options at the moment. But it’s also a possibility that he could come on during the game. I’ll make a decision after our final training session.

…World Champions André Schürrle and Julian Draxler: André Schürrle is fit. He is able to train and doesn’t have any problems. He could play tomorrow, the same as Julian Draxler. All the players are ready to play.

…new member of the squad Karim Bellarabi: Karim Bellarabi had only one thought and that was that he wanted to play for Germany. We didn’t have any influence on his decision. What makes him stand out is his movement, his skill, his ability to recognise open spaces and the fact that he can use one-twos to get forward.

...Max Kruse and not being selected for the World Cup: Everyone who was selected were called up on merit – that was no different with Max Kruse. He’s recovered well from his injury and is a further option for me following the retirement of Miroslav Klose.

...his main players: We have a decent spine, despite some injury problems. World Champions such as Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng are all there. Toni Kroos and Mario Götze both belong to that group too. That spine with these players is superb.

...the current situation of the team: My plans have been thrown into the wind a tad due to the injury situation. Mesut Özil was included in those plans too. Despite this, I still believe that we can form a good side. History has shown that form in the October games is a lot better than it is in September.

...his new assistant Thomas Schneider: The first few days have been very positive. Of course we still have to give him time to adjust and settle in. He’s fit into the coaching set-up well though and got his views across. Thomas does that well and has super ability as a coach. I think that we can push on from here smoothly, from where we left off with Hansi Flick.

...being World Champions: We are the side to beat. All teams will now try and claim a scalp against the World Champions even more. We found life tough against Poland in the friendly in Hamburg (0-0 on 13th May 2014). We have to be on our guard.

...opponents Poland: A feisty encounter awaits us, that’s for sure. Poland are our biggest rivals in our group for top spot, alongside Ireland. Poland are especially good in attack thanks to skipper Robert Lewandowski.

Löw: “We should have a say in the Euro 2016 title too”, 06.10.2014

The World Champions have two important UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers in the next week or so: Poland are the opponents in Warsaw on Saturday (20:45 CEST), followed by a meeting with the Republic of Ireland in Gelsenkirchen the following Tuesday (14th October, 20:45 CEST). For this week’s Big Interview on DFB.de, we asked manager Joachim Löw about his expectations of the team. The coach also spoke about the side effects of winning the World Cup and both new and old faces in the national team.

DFB.de: Mr. Löw, you were in London on Saturday and watched Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Arsenal. What did you make of the heavyweight Premier League clash?

Joachim Löw: Chelsea’s performance was really impressive. It was a very intensive game, as you would expect, but Chelsea deserved to win. They are very stable and the players do what manager José Mourinho asks of them very well.

DFB.de: How happy were you with the performances of your players? Did you learn anything new about André Schürrle, Mesut Özil or Lukas Podolski?

Löw: No, and it’s not about that. In general, I always think it’s worthwhile watching our players live. There is no replicating the impressions you can gather when watching first-hand. Also, it gives me a chance to speak with the players and the club managers, which is usually very insightful. With André, you can really tell that the World Cup has benefited him. He was good before, but now he has even more confidence. He had a lot of good moments and applied good pressure. Mesut is on a good path; he’s put in some great displays for Arsenal lately. We know Lukas’ situation, but we’re also fully aware of his quality. It’s not easy for him at the moment, but he will come through it – I’m very confident of that. We know what Lukas has provided the national team with over the last ten years.

DFB.de: You’ve been asked how you become a World Champion plenty of times, but how does it feel to be a World Cup winner?

Löw: Very good, thank you. We experienced some magic moments in Brazil, moments for eternity. We all enjoyed the tournament and the incredible reception back home. We can be proud of what we achieved. But there’s one mistake that we’re not allowed to make.

DFB.de: And what’s that?

Löw: To lie down after that success. The ball keeps on rolling and we still have big goals. We should be having a say in the destination of the EURO 2016 title too.

DFB.de: You had a successful start to qualification with a 2-1 win over Scotland. The second game on Saturday probably presents the biggest challenge: A meeting with Poland in Warsaw.

Löw: Both of the games in October are of great significance for us. If we can get wins against Poland and then Ireland, then we will already have a small cushion. We want to take this chance. However, we’re only at the beginning of a long journey. No one has already qualified after three games. On top of that, I don’t just have a lot of respect for the Polish team, but the first qualifier against Scotland showed us that we have tricky opponents in our group. The same goes for the Irish. They play with a lot of commitment, enthusiasm and passion. We certainly won’t make the mistake of underestimating our opponents. We are the World Champions, but that alone doesn’t win you games by a long shot.

DFB.de: What makes Poland’s game so dangerous?

Löw: It’s usually tight when we face Poland. The games have often helped push us in the right direction; we all remember the 1-0 win in Dortmund at the 2006 World Cup. Just like back then, Poland have a lot of individual quality, vast experience and a distinctive team spirit. Robert Lewandowski is an exceptional footballer; he’s one of the three best strikers in the world for me. He showed that again during Bayern’s game against Hannover on Saturday (two Lewandowski goals in a 4-0 win). Not many players know how to command the ball under pressure like he can. He’s clinical in front of goal and he also has technical ability. He is a complete striker. However, Poland aren’t just about Lewandowski. It wouldn’t be enough to just take him out the game. We have to deal with the whole team, who will also be roared on by their home supporters in Warsaw.

DFB.de: So the meeting with Poland is somewhat a key game. Are your key players in good nick? Do you get the feeling that the strain of the World Cup could still play a role?

Löw: Obviously a major tournament always demands a lot of you, both physically and mentally. Also, we’ve been there right to the end of the recent ones. However, I feel that generally the majority of our players are in good condition now. One or two players had some problems in September, but they’ve come on since then. Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Thomas Müller and Mario Götze are playing at a very high level. Christoph Kramer is making an impression week after week and the same goes for the players abroad. Toni Kroos is the central figure at Real; he didn’t have any problems slotting in. And like I said, Özil’s form is improving at Arsenal and André Schürrle is looking good.

DFB.de: Mats Hummels was out injured for a while, Bastian Schweinsteiger is still missing and the same goes for Sami Khedira. Benedikt Höwedes will also miss the games against Poland and Ireland due to injury.

Löw: That’s true and I feel for them. But I don’t know if that has anything to do with their exertions during the World Cup. That theory doesn’t hold for those four players in particular that you mentioned. The fact is, all four of them were also injured at some point during last winter or at the start of the year. They are some of the players that have the least amount of games in their legs. We know the strain and we know the interests of the clubs. In the period when the players are with us, we look at each situation individually and we also allow for individual training if we feel it makes sense. It’s about finding the right balance between a heavy strain, training and a game on the one hand, and recovery, individual care and treatment on the other.

DFB.de: Meaning?

Löw: When we have competitive fixtures, so when we’re playing for points in qualifying matches, then the national team takes priority. There cannot be two opinions about the matter. We always want to play with the strongest team available in the qualifiers in particular. But like I said, we always keep an eye on the strain of the players. When it makes sense to give a player a rest, then we will do so, just as we have done in the past. It goes without saying that I also take the players’ and the clubs’ interests into consideration. I often speak to the club managers about that.

DFB.de: Just like in Kevin Großkreutz’s case, a player you haven’t called up this time.

Löw: Yes, I spoke to BVB manager Jürgen Klopp about Kevin. We quickly agreed that it makes more sense to allow him to use the international break to work individually and get back into gear with his club. The national team will benefit when he returns to us.

DFB.de: With Schweinsteiger and Khedira absent, the question of the captain for the two upcoming games arises. Manuel Neuer led the players out for the match against Scotland…

Löw: The captaincy isn’t an issue we are too concerned with within the team – fortunately, we have several players who can take on the responsibility both on and off the pitch. Manuel Neuer is one of them and he will wear the armband against Poland and Ireland. He is a worthy captain of the national team in Bastian’s absence.

DFB.de: Thomas Schneider is involved for the first time. You’ve coordinated a lot with your new assistant over the past weeks. How has the collaboration been so far and what do you expect in the future?

Löw: It wasn’t the case that I had to get to know Thomas first. He was one of my players at VfB Stuttgart after all, and in my opinion he is a fantastic coach who brings in his own new ideas and that will benefit us. We have met several times and have constantly been in contact. I’m confident that we will carry on seamlessly from where we left off with Hansi Flick. Andreas Köpke, Oliver Bierhoff and I are looking forward to working with Thomas on the training pitch and in the dugout.

DFB.de: You have given a player his very first international call-up in the form of Karim Bellarabi, while Max Kruse returns to the setup. What were the key reasons behind those decisions?

Löw: As always, it’s down to sporting reasons. We always said that Max has the ability to increase our potential in attack. We had different plans for the World Cup, but that has nothing to with his fundamental qualities. He’s started the season superbly with Gladbach. He’s consistently played at a high level so he has deserved this opportunity.

DFB.de: And Bellarabi?

Löw: He’s someone we’ve had our eye on for a while. His development has been remarkable. He’s incredibly quick and his acceleration is phenomenal. He has also improved defensively. I like how he works without the ball. I’m convinced that he can be a good option for us. I’m looking forward to welcoming him to the team on Tuesday and meeting him personally.

November gegen Gastgeber Spanien.

No rain on Löw's parade, Jul 2014

During the 2014 World Cup, Germany’s national team learned relatively quickly that rain is quite an event in Brazil. Almost every day at Campo Bahia brought a short, sharp downpour that disappeared as quickly as it had come, only to be replaced with the same clear blue skies from which it had suddenly materialised. It was a similar story in Recife ahead of Die Mannschaft’s final group match against the USA, with one crucial difference: the rain refused to go away this time. There were doubts as to whether the match could go ahead, while the skies over Brazil wept with such persistence and intensity that it seemed they had foreseen the defeat this Germany side would ultimately inflict on A Seleção in the semi-final in Belo Horizonte.

At the German national side’s hotel, the rain presented all manner of logistical challenges on the morning of their match against Jürgen Klinsmann’s team. Recife had received more than a year’s average rainfall in the past 12 hours and the telephones were abuzz with anxious questions. Is the pitch playable? What are FIFA saying? How do we get to the stadium? When do we need to leave? How are the fans getting here? Are the streets passable? Is Mike Horn [the explorer and adventurer who gave the Germany squad a motivational talk before the tournament began] still available?

Outside, the streets had been transformed into rivers and it seemed as if the best way of reaching the Arena Pernambuco would be by boat. Die Nationalelf drove along the Atlantic coast to Recife, and in many places the only indicators of where the ocean ended and the city began were signs forbidding swimming and warning of sharks. Although the record will show that 26 June was an extraordinary day in Recife, events on the football pitch unfolded as planned. Both teams made it to the stadium on time and so did most of the spectators, contrary to some previous reports. Most importantly, the pitch drained remarkably well. The turf was wet, slow and difficult, but it was playable, and somehow Germany’s third game of the 2014 World Cup played out under normal conditions.

The build-up to the game was dominated by inappropriate comparisons with the past. Memories of the controversial match between Germany and Austria at the 1982 World Cup resurfaced as the spirit of Gijon threatened to haunt proceedings in Recife. Back then, events unfolded in such a way that a 1-0 win for Germany in the final group game would keep both them and their Austrian opponents in the tournament – and that is exactly what happened. Germany won the game in Gijon by a single goal to ensure the progression of both sides at the expense of Algeria.

Thirty-two years later, Germany and the USA were faced with a similar situation ahead of their match at the 2014 World Cup, with a draw enough to see both teams through to the Round of 16 regardless of how the parallel game between Ghana and Portugal finished. Suddenly Gijon was on everyone’s lips to such an extent that Hansi Flick felt it necessary to re-state the obvious once more. “Of course there won’t be any arrangements,” Löw’s assistant coach emphasised. “There’s no way we’ll be playing for a draw.”

As a result, Germany neither played for a draw amid the rain of Recife nor ended up with one, thanks to the belief shown by all the players and an outstanding moment from one player in particular: Thomas Müller. It all began when Die Mannschaft won a corner in the 55th minute: Mesut Özil played a short ball to Toni Kroos, who rolled it straight back to his team-mate for the cross. The ball curved into the penalty area towards Per Mertesacker, who headed the ball towards the far corner, but USA goalkeeper Tim Howard was quick to get down and clear the shot.

But this was not the end of the story. Howard’s steered the ball into the path of Müller, who wasted no time in stroking the ball past assorted legs and arms into the right-hand corner. It was the goal of an artist and a sight so astonishing to behold that it even amazed the man who created it. “For once I scored a beautiful goal,” said Müller before adding, in his inimitable style: “I realised I was unmarked, so I concentrated on the far corner and it worked.” When asked why this worked so well, the Bayern stalwart replied: “Because all I do every day is train like a lunatic.” Müller’s strike proved to be the only goal of the game, securing Germany the three points and first place in Group G, but there were two victorious teams on the pitch that evening. Despite ending their campaign on a high note by beating Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal team-mates did not win by a sufficiently high margin, meaning that the USA’s four points and superior goal difference was enough to qualify them for the last 16 behind Die Mannschaft on seven points. Despite the tremendous amount of precipitation, neither team left Recife under a cloud of despondency that day.
